For those who struggle with meditation this will help you get started. Meditation is the act of observing your own thoughts and not being critical about what you’re thinking. The best way to describe meditation is to pretend your thoughts are clouds in the sky and you are laying in a field watching the clouds go by. You aren’t there to follow the clouds you are just there to observe them as they past.
You are not there to follow one constant thought you are only there to observe. The good thing about guided meditation is that it talks your through the whole entire process. It helps you focus on the present and calm your mind with a bit more help. A guided mediation talks you through everything which helps you focus on the present more and not let your mind focus so intensely on one thought.
To find good guided meditations just check them out on youtube and see what one works best for you. I also recommend downloading an app that will help as well. Once or twice a day anywhere from 5- 20 minutes is enough for you to relax and let your mind settle down. Some of my favourite guided meditation apps are Sleep Easily, Smiling Mind, Take a Break and Headspace.
Try guided meditations and see how you go!

Why do you get out of bed in the morning? What drives you? What is that one thing that makes you face the day? Everyone has something. Maybe you have more than one thing. Maybe it is your kick ass job. Maybe it is the job you are trying to get. Maybe you get out of bed for someone in particular. I want you to ask yourself this question and if you can’t think of anything you ain’t trying hard enough. If you don’t have something why get out of bed? Do you do it because you have to or because it is what society claims as socially acceptable.
Why not get out of bed in the morning with a purpose. Brainstorm your reasons and see how far you can take it. If making money drives you to get out of bed then ask yourself why? What will that money do for you? Is it for your own self worth? Do you get out of bed to feel like you’ve made it? To help give yourself a feeling of success.
You have to have a reason, you got to have a purpose. I stress this so much because people everyday drift around without a purpose. You were not put on this earth to “drift” you were put on earth because you are powerful beyond belief and you DO have a purpose. Starting tomorrow I want you to wake up with something in mind. Whether you have 10 things your waking up for or only 1 it doesn’t matter. Waking up with a reason to be alive is not only good for yourself it will rub off on the people around you.

Freedom. What is it? Who has it? Who wants it? Freedom is happiness, freedom is life, and freedom is everything. It doesn’t matter who you are, where you came from, who you are with, everyone and everything wants to be free. Freedom of your own mind, freedom from society, freedom of choice. It is our whole goal as human beings to be free. Whether you are working hard all year to go on vacation, whether you are waiting till 5 pm so you can go home from work, everything comes back to freedom. The music you listen to that makes you feel liberated is what we hold onto. Every adult wishes they could close their eyes and be dancing in an open field like no one is watching. For all of you that do not believe you want freedom in some way, let me tell you here that you do. Freedom is happiness. Freedom is not being alone; it is having people around you that make you feel free. It could be your loved ones, your friends, your job, it doesn’t matter what it is as long as you feel some type of freedom.
Doing what you want, being who you are, these are all things that give you that sense of freedom. Wherever you are, whoever you are with remember that freedom is yours and always will be. You are never locked away, you always have a say. Speak up, be yourself, you are always allowed to dance. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Freedom is a state of mind just as happiness is.

We are told our entire lives to treat others with respect. I can still picture my grade 4 teacher saying “treat others the way you want to be treated.” We go on to believe that as long as we are treating others with dignity and respect then we are doing the right thing. I then realized one of the most important things people forget is that you have to be kind to yourself. If you are not kind to yourself how is the world going to love you back? I hope that everyone starts to treat themselves with love and never forget that you are always deserving of it.

Why Meditate? Now I know you are already thinking this post is going to be about turning into Buddha and moving to Tibet to become a monk. Wrong. Meditation is something that can benefit everyone’s life and help de-stress you without spending any money. Does that not sound great? Becoming a calmer and more relaxed person without spending a cent! The benefits of meditation are endless and the longer you do it the better you get. You will have more energy, be at a zen state of mind and will learn to control your thoughts. Once you can control your thoughts better you will have more control over your own life. Steps to meditation:
1) Find an area, maybe in your room or somewhere quiet that you can sit on the ground, legs crossed and be comfortable. I like to sit on a pillow so it feels more comfortable.
2) Turn off the lights and connect your thumb and index finger together over top of your knees. You can also put your hands in prayer over your heart, whatever works best for you.
3) Shut your eyes and clear your mind of everything. Try your best not to think of anything or move during your meditation.
4) Start out by doing 10 minutes of meditation a day, once you get good up it to 20 minutes and then eventually to 30 minutes. I’m still at 10 minutes a day and it still seems like a long time. Enjoy your meditation since it is time all to yourself for a short period of time in a day.

As I sat dipping my chocolate chip cookies into my milk I realized how perfect that moment was. It is exactly what gives our entire lives purpose and meaning. It is about the little things and the little things count more than you will ever know. Take a minute to think of something small like that, which means so much to you. Imagine if your favorite things were taken away from you, all you would want is another chance to be able to live that again. So in the midst of your chaotic life and big dreams, remember that the chocolate chip cookies in milk mean the most and that you must appreciate it while you still can. For me they symbolize my love for food, the simple things in life and how lucky I am to be able to sit and eat them in the first place. Namaste – Carly Jensen
Now when some people here the word “spirituality,” it makes them want to find the nearest garbage can and throw up in it. “I’m not spiritual, I don’t believe in religion.” These are often quotes you will hear from people that do not believe in a higher power, or those who just simply like to believe in nothing. I have never been a big believer in higher powers, and I was never really a spiritual person, but that all changed the moment I started doing yoga. It teaches you about life and how to become a more peaceful person, then once you start believing in yourself and the possibilities you have, you realize this force, this unforeseen power within you. That is what I like to call “spirituality.” You realize that your thoughts control your destiny and that when you are at peace with yourself the world works with you. There is this really great quote from “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho and it goes … “And when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” I truly believe that all people in some shape or form should listen to themselves, and get connected with their soul. Follow what you believe is right and listen to the spirit inside you that holds your destiny. Whether you practice yoga regularly or attend church every Sunday, find what speaks to you and listen. Peace, love and kindness, three simple words that mean so much. These words are the basis in which I live my life by. I recently made a commitment to myself that no matter what I do, I will abide by these three words. Life is too short not to treat people with peace, love and kindness. Everyone you meet has a story and is fighting a tough battle so the very least you can do is show some kindness. There is no need to hold anger in your heart; if you devote your life to being a kind person you will reap the benefits. Even during difficult times be light, be soft, and show love. The people around you will learn and grow from your peaceful nature and it will bring joy into their lives. I hope everyone can work on displaying peace, love and kindness to each person they meet. Uplifting, exhilarating and empowering, Kundalini Yoga is the ultimate treat for your mind, body and soul. When I started yoga my goal was to become a stress free and relaxed person. With all the stress we have in our day to day lives I thought yoga would be the perfect fix. My yoga journey started at Semperviva Yoga in Kitsilano taking Hatha classes and trying to become more flexible. After numerous Hatha classes I declared to my friends and family that I was officially a “Yogi.” Then on one evening my yoga dreams would forever change. My friend and I decided to try a Kundalini class and from that day on I would never choose another. Kundalini was like nothing I had ever done before. Singing, dancing, cheering, screaming, anything goes. It was a way of letting out everything, the good and the bad.
Kundalini Yoga awakens the spirit and gives you a chance to free yourself from fear, anxiety, and tension; anything that is holding you back in life. It teaches you that you are powerful beyond belief and makes you appreciate everything life has to offer. Through certain chants, yoga postures and techniques you will release all that you hold inside cleansing your soul and giving you hope moving forward. Dancing is a key element and it is so much fun to get moving and feel free to be who you are with a community of people that are very accepting. Voice is another key element in Kundalini yoga making us remember that we always have a voice and we must use it. Never be afraid to speak and express yourself. Be silly, have some fun and go to Kundalini Yoga.
